Dippemess Frankfurt (spring)
7th April to 1st May 2017
The Dippemess in Frankfurt is the largest fun fair of its kind in the region and takes place twice a year for several weeks - in spring and in autumn - on the festival ground in front of Frankfurts icehockey stadium (Eissporthalle). Under a large ferris wheel, several spectacular rides, roller coasters, ghost trains, tombolas, shooting galleries and merry-go-rounds promise action and fun. Food booths offer local and international specialties, and, only during the spring Dippemess, a large marquee (tent) invites guests to enjoy live music and the one or other beer or apple wine.
The tradition of the Dippemess goes way back to the 14th century. In its origins, it was a fair (in Frankfurt: "Mess") for all kinds of houseware and pottery. "Dippe" is Frankfurt dialect for "Töpfe", meaning pots. At some point, some merry-go-rounds were set up during the "pottery fair" to entertain the children, and over the centuries, amusement became the central theme of the event. Nowadays, only a few single stands remind of the market's history, offering traditional Frankfurt pottery and other household supplies.
On Tuesdays from 2 to 6pm, children up to 12 years get a "2 for 1" offer on tickets of selected rides, and every Thursday, the "family day" allows everyone to enjoy all attractions on half price, all day long. Each Dippemess ends with impressive fireworks that can be heard through half of the city.
