Frankfurt Christmas Market

25th Nov - 22nd Dec 2019

The Frankfurt Christmas market, which origins date back to 1393, is one of the largest and, with roughly three million guests, one of the most visited in Germany. Highlight, together with the wonderful old merry-go-round, is the market’s Christmas tree - always one of the tallest in the country - which is traditionally placed in front of the Römer City Hall.

The market extends over the entire Römerberg, the Paulsplatz, Liebfrauenberg and Hauptwache as well as the Main quay; for those not afraid of heights, the crowning point is the view from the rooftop gallery of the St. Nicolas church.

Classic drink is Glühwein (hot spiced wine) or the Frankfurt version: hot apple wine, together with traditional Frankfurt Bethmännchen (marzipan candies) and roasted almonds - or, if you are more hungry, a Bratwurst, a Dampfnudel (Seat yeast dumpling) or a Langosch. Around 200 stands offer all sorts of wonderfully crafted Christmas articles and mostly hand-made gifts.

The Frankfurt Christmas Market usually starts late November and ends a few days before Christmas. During this period, everyone in town visits it a couple of times, and it is very popular for a get together of colleagues after work for the one or other Glühwein.

The Frankfurt Tourist Office offers an array of interesting Christmas Market theme-tours (history, stories, typical Frankfurt Xmas gifts and the like). For more details and booking.

A Christmas Market Weekend Package - overnight, Xmas market coupon-booklet, Frankfurt Card - can also be booked over the Frankfurt Tourist Office - more details and booking
